Banpu Energy Australia has owned and operated Manildra Solar Farm since 2021. To support the reliability and security of the national electricity market, large-scale batteries are becoming increasingly important to store excess solar and wind for use during times of high demand.
The Manildra Solar Farm Modification would include the installation of lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of up to 60 MW with up to four hours storage duration. The batteries would be housed in units similar in appearance to shipping containers. It is proposed that they will be a modification to existing solar farm.
Timeline
Prepare modification report
The modification report provides information on economic, environmental and social impacts of the project.
Prepare and Lodge Submissions Report
We will prepare a report to respond to submissions and may engage further with community and government agencies during this stage.
Modification is operational
Following 18 months construction, the Manildra Solar Farm Mod 3 is complete and operational (if approved)

Manildra Solar Farm Operational
Manildra Solar Farm is currently operational.
Submit modification report and public exhibition
We submit the modification report to the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) who will publicly exhibit it for a minimum of 14 days.
Project Determination
A notice of determination is issued which will include requirements for how the project must be built and operated.
Approvals Process
Approval for the modification is being sought through a State significant development (SSD) Section 4.55(2) modification application, to be assessed under Part 4 of the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
The NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) is the determining authority for SSD applications.
